The uniquity of Vilnius castles
Vilnius Castles are a unique combination of world heritage, as here two types of world heritage converge.
Firstly, the Vilnius Castles are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the part of Historic Vilnius centre.
The castles constitute one of the essential components of outstanding value because the historical center is shaped not only by the defensive walls of Vilnius but also by the three Vilnius Castles (Upper, Lower and Crooked).
Secondly, for the past 50 years, Song Festival have been taking place in the Vilnius Castles, which are included in the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. In the territory of the Crooked Castle, where the Three Crosses monument now stands and the Mountain Park stage is arranged, the Evening of Ensembles takes place. In Cathedral Square and Castle Square, other events of the Song Festival unfold. Even within the territory of the Vilnius Castles, at 8 Barboros Radvilaitės Street, the headquarters of the Song Festivals is located – the Lithuanian National Culture Center.
As far as we know, places where two types of world heritage converge are very rare, so we can confidently state that the Vilnius Castles are a unique world heritage site.
To allow the residents of Vilnius and the city's guests to become acquainted with this unique place, the administration continuously organizes guided tours (excursions).
