Directorate goals and objectives

The Goal of Directorate - to ensure Vilnius Castle's and Vilnius Castle's territory valuables preservation.

The Ministery of Culture of Republic of Lithuania has formulated these main acitivity tasks:

• preserve Vilnius Upper, Lower and Crooked castle's underground and surface valuables;
• preserve other heritage objects in Vilnius Castle's territory: Vilnius Cathedral, Three Crosses Hill, Palace of Kirdiejai, the House of Horaine, etc.
• organize Vilnius Castle's and other culture/environment heritage obejct's scientific reasearch, inspection and ensure tourism in these objects. 

At this time, some of cultural heritage objects are being taken under care by other organisations - which are the administrators of these objects. By the law enquirements, their obligation is to ensure the preservation of these objects for future generations. The organisations are:

• Vilnius City Municipality and it's subordinate institutions take care of Cathedral square, monument of the Great Lithuanian Duke Gediminas, monument of Lithuanian King Mindaugas, monument of Three Crosses, monument for artist Matislaw Dobuzhinski, monument for Lithuanian Hounds, Palace of Kirdiejai, Rotonda Restaurant and other buildings in Vilnius Castles State Cultural Reserve territory (streets, parking lots, bridges of Vilnia river, public toilet in Sereikiškės park, city lights and etc.).
• National Museum and the Palace of the Great Duchy of Lithuania  supervise, protect and manage Vilnius Upper Castle, the Nwe Arsenal and it's surrounding buildings, the House of Citizen, the remains of St. Ann's and st. Barbara's Churches, the House of Horaine and buildings in this complex.
• National Museum and the Palace of the Great Duchy of Lithuania supervise, protect and manage the remains of Vilnius Lower Castle and other associated valuables.
• National Art Museum of Lithuania and Applied Arts and Design Museum supervise, protect and manage Old Arsenal building and it's surroundings.
• Vilnius archdiocese and  Museum of Church heritage as well as it's other surrounding institutions protect and manage Vilnius Cathedral, Vilnius Cathedral Tower and surroundings of these buildings.

In this day, Vilnius Caastles State Cultural Resserve area is about 54,8 ha. Directorate of Vilnius Castles is in account for other cultural/environmental heritage valuables protection which are in Sereikiškės park and Hills park territory (this would make about 40,5 ha area or 73 percent of all area of Reserve).
