Lithuanian Castles 2006
In July 2007, the second issue of the magazine "Lietuvos pilys" (Castles of Lithuania) was published.
It is dedicated to the memory of the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Alexander Jagiellon (reigned from 1492 to 1506). His remains rest in the Royal Mausoleum of Vilnius Cathedral. In 2006, the 500th anniversary of his death was commemorated. On this occasion, the Directorate of the State Cultural Reserve of Vilnius Castles organized an international scientific conference on November 9-10, titled "The Culture of Alexander Jagiellon's Manor."
This issue features the latest research on Vilnius Lower Castle.
Renowned archaeologist and architectural historian Dr. Oleg Trusov is a guest contributor, presenting the history and current state of Lyda Castle to our readers. Another author in this publication is Antanas Seibutis, Head of the Historical Research Department of the "Sėla" Museum in Biržai, sharing insights about Biržai Fortress. The second issue is also richly illustrated, featuring a silver half-groat from the times of Alexander, discovered during archaeological excavations in the Lower Castle, on its cover.
